British teenager who killed his girlfriend by setting her afire convicted

Cries of “Yes” echoed round the packed public gallery, and Ms McCagh’s parents linked arms and wept when the jury delivered their decision.

A teenager who killed his girlfriend by dousing her in petrol and setting her
alight was facing life sentence today after being found guilty of her “cruel
and barbaric” murder.

Stewart Blackburn who was found guilty of the murder of Jessica McCagh at Livingston High Court

Jessica McCagh, 17, was engulfed in flames when Stewart Blackburn, 18, set
light to her in the bedroom of his flat in Arbroath, Angus, after she had
threatened to leave him during a row.

The judge, Lord Bracadale, said today that Blackburn had shown “a degree of
wickedness” that would leave right-thinking people feeling “deeply
disturbed”.

“She was your girlfriend, aged 17 years, and she died a terrible death at your
hands,” he said. “Her family are left bereft.”

Deferring sentencing until January for reports, Lord Bracadale said that only
one punishment, life imprisonment, was applicable.

After a ten-day trial the jury at Livingston High Court took less than two
hours to find Blackburn guilty of the murder on April 25 last year.
